The Nike Air Penny 2 “Atlantic Blue” is a retro of an original 1996 colorway from Penny Hardaway’s second signature sneaker. As a cornerstone of the Penny line, the Air Penny 2 was designed to match Hardaway’s versatile playstyle, featuring a blend of Air Max cushioning in the heel and Zoom Air in the forefoot. Since Penny played for the Orlando Magic, all three OG colorways of the Penny 2 reflected some variation of the team’s iconic blue, black, and white.
I’ve had Penny 2s before, but at one point, I felt like they didn’t fit my style anymore and sold off my old pairs. Lately, though, I’ve found myself getting back into retro basketball sneakers, and when I saw these for more than half off, I figured it was the perfect way to jump back in. The crisp Atlantic Blue and the signature wavy midsole design really hit, and with the discount, it was an easy decision.
This shoe still holds up today, yet stays true to its legacy. The colorway, shape, and comfort make this release a great pickup—especially at a discount. Would I have paid full retail? Maybe not. But for the price I got them at? Absolutely worth it.
These come in the standard orange Nike Sportswear box, laced up with regular skinny white oval laces.
Materials
As far as materials go, the Atlantic Blue sections are a synthetic felt-like suede, while the rest of the upper is leather. The materials aren’t anything out of the ordinary for a retro, but they still hold up well. One nice surprise is that the leather actually has a little softness to it, rather than the stiff plastic-like leather we sometimes see on Nike retros. Overall, nothing premium, but it does the job.
Fit & Comfort
For a retro basketball shoe, the comfort is about what you’d expect, but honestly, these feel better than I remember from previous retros. They’re actually lighter and less clunky feeling on foot than they look. I went true to size, and they fit well—no unnecessary tightness or awkward break-in period. The Air Max and Zoom Air combo provides a decent balance of cushioning and support, making these a solid retro option for casual wear.
If these are sold out online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
